Anthropic is considering releasing another artificial intelligence model as it faces renewed competition from OpenAI ahead of a possible initial public offering, according to Reuters.
Three people familiar with the matter told Reuters that Anthropic is weighing a new model following the September 3 launch of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra. The company has not announced the model, its name, or when it could be released, and declined to comment on the report.
Astra has quickly gained ground among business users. Reuters reported that it now accounts for around 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by expense platform Ramp, compared with about 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable. OpenRouter users also spent more on OpenAI models than Anthropic models during a recent week, the first time that has happened in more than two and a half years.
The deliberations come shortly after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the pace of capability improvements over safety concerns. Reuters said Anthropic is evaluating the safety of its next model as part of its decision on whether and when to release it.
Anthropic only introduced Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1. Fable 5.1 is generally available, while the more restricted Mythos 5.1 is offered through Anthropic’s trusted-access programs for areas including cybersecurity and life sciences.
The potential launch also comes as Anthropic prepares for an expected IPO. Reuters reported that the company could push the listing until after the U.S. midterm elections in November, although no final timetable has been announced.
Claude is already available in the Philippines through both Claude.ai and Anthropic’s commercial API. That means a broadly released successor could eventually reach Filipino users and developers, although Anthropic has not confirmed availability for the reported model.
