Sony is bringing AI-based image upscaling to the PS5 with Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a less computationally demanding version of the technology behind PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to support QSSR. Sony Interactive Entertainment released updates for both titles on October 1, adding the technology as a graphics option on PS5.
QSSR was developed through Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics collaboration with AMD. It uses a streamlined neural network architecture and an implementation specifically tuned for the PS5 to reduce the processing requirements that had previously kept PSSR-style AI upscaling on the PS5 Pro.
PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to reconstruct them with greater detail and image stability. Sony says QSSR brings similar improvements to the PS5, although PSSR remains the more capable option on PS5 Pro.
Insomniac Games says Marvel’s Wolverine uses QSSR by default on PS5 following its version 1.002.000 update. The studio says the technology improves image detail and stability, alongside other fixes included in the patch.
For Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch Productions says QSSR improves the rendering of fine details in characters and environments while providing greater temporal stability. Those improvements are company claims rather than independently tested results.
Sony plans to make the QSSR library broadly available to PlayStation developers, opening the technology to more PS5 games. The company has not announced additional supported titles or a timetable for wider adoption.
