Globe Telecom is disputing the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) finding of poor mobile broadband service in parts of Metro Manila, pointing to the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) latest Telco Report Card.
Globe said on September 27 that the report card gave it an overall score of 81.5 for August, up 4.4 points from January. Its average download speed reached 45.9Mbps, 26% higher than the 36.5Mbps recorded in January. Globe also cited a network quality score of 71.2, up from 69.2, with latency steady at 20ms.
Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer Yoly Crisanto told GMA News in a television interview that the company is concerned by the NTC’s statement that it has not improved services. She said the latest DICT report shows otherwise.
Globe general counsel Froilan Castelo, moreover, said in the company’s statement that there are still communities where “the experience needs to be better.”
As CTRL+PH reported, the NTC said on September 25 that it had prepared show-cause orders against Globe, Smart Communications, and DITO Telecommunity, with a daily penalty of PHP 100,000. For Globe, it flagged Manila, Makati, and Quezon City.
Globe’s statement gives no breakdown for those areas, however.
Smart, on the other hand, told GMA News Online that it had not received the show-cause letter and was not in a position to comment.
The NTC’s statement said only that the orders had been prepared, not whether they had been served. The agency will retest the flagged areas every two weeks.
