TP-Link opens Archer 8 Ultra pre-orders before Wi-Fi 8 is final

TP-Link’s first Wi-Fi 8 router is reaching buyers years before final IEEE approval, with several features still due through firmware updates.

TP-Link has opened pre-orders for the Archer 8 Ultra, its first Wi-Fi 8 router, even though the IEEE 802.11bn standard it is built around is still under development and several of the router’s Wi-Fi 8 features will arrive later through firmware updates.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) approved Draft 2.0 of 802.11bn in September. Its current schedule targets final 802.11 working-group approval in March 2028 and final standards-board approval in May 2028.

That means the Archer 8 Ultra is reaching consumers relatively early in Wi-Fi 8’s development. TP-Link itself notes that early Wi-Fi 8 products may appear before final ratification and that features and timing can change as standards work progresses.

The router launches with Unequal Modulation (UEQM), new Modulation and Coding Schemes (MCS), 2×LDPC, and Non-Primary Channel Access (NPCA). TP-Link says these technologies are intended to maintain more consistent throughput at longer ranges and under interference.

Other Wi-Fi 8 capabilities are coming later. TP-Link plans to add Dynamic Sub-band Operation (DSO), Enhanced Long Range (ELR), Distributed Resource Units (DRU), Coordinated Time-Division Multiple Access (Co-TDMA), Coordinated Spatial Reuse (Co-SR), and Coordinated Beamforming (Co-BF) through over-the-air updates as the standard matures.

These features are designed to improve capacity with many connected devices, strengthen connections near the edge of coverage, and coordinate multiple access points.

Wi-Fi 8 itself is less focused on increasing headline peak speeds than previous generations. TP-Link’s Philippine documentation lists the same theoretical maximum PHY rate for Wi-Fi 8 and Wi-Fi 7, with the newer standard instead adding technologies intended to improve reliability, roaming, interference handling, and performance in crowded networks.

The Archer 8 Ultra is a tri-band router rated for up to 19Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput. It has 18 internal antennas, two 10Gbps WAN/LAN ports, and four 2.5Gbps LAN ports.

TP-Link first showed the router alongside the Deco 8 Ultra mesh system at IFA 2026 in September.

Pre-orders have begun in select overseas markets, but TP-Link has not announced local pricing or availability for the Archer 8 Ultra.
